When I started this blog a few years ago, I didn’t know where it might lead or what type of response to expect. My initial goal was to use my love for fashion and shoes as a platform to change the perception of Parkinson’s disease and hopefully, encourage others living with the disease. I must admit, I had my doubts that I could meet those goals on a broad scale. Would anyone read what I had to say? Would people be supportive? Would fashion prove to be an effective platform for raising awareness? My thought was that if I could reach just one person struggling with Parkinson’s, it would be worth it.
Over the past few years, I’ve been blessed to connect with people and organizations from all over the world. As a result, many amazing opportunities have come my way. I’ve spoken at regional, national and international conferences, participated in a Parkinson’s Policy Forum on Capitol Hill, shared my story in several mainstream publications, and been invited to serve as a patient advocate on various boards. I never envisioned that The Shoe Maven would open so many doors. God truly is good.
With all of these opportunities comes growth and change. In 2017, I focused on becoming more physically active, which is critical to the management of Parkinson’s. I found a renewed passion for running. Running is not only a great way to manage my symptoms, it’s also a fantastic platform for increasing awareness and fundraising for a cure. I’ve run several races to fundraise, but my greatest accomplishment was completing the New York City marathon in November. Throughout all of this I learned a lot – about myself, my relationship with my husband, and Parkinson’s.
In light of all of this, I found myself wanting to share more that I’ve learned, and continue to learn, on my journey. So, I’m going to. The Shoe Maven will still include fashion, but I’m also going to focus on fitness, advocacy and other aspects of living a joyful life.
I revamped The Shoe Maven logo to reflect my new focus. I’ve also incorporated the color orange in the logo and throughout my site, because that color is of great significance to me. Orange is the color of the Michael J. Fox Foundation. If you have followed me for any time at all, you know that MJFF is a huge part of my life.
I hope you will continue to join me on my journey.
